Event narrative

A trained spotter reported 11.9 inches at 1 N Syosset. An NWS Employee reported 9.8 inches at 1 WSW Levittown. The public reported 12.1 inches in Glen Cove and a cocorahs report of 10.8 inches in Herricks. Snowfall and sleet combined were estimated to have averaged around 12 inches across the zone. A retired NYPD Officer collapsed and died at his church in Floral Park while preparing to clear snow for the congregation.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure system emerged out of the Southern Plains and Texas and rode northeast through the Tennessee Valley and the Appalachians, before emerging just off the New Jersey coast. This produced a heavy snowfall across all of Southeastern New York, with sleet, some of it heavy across a large portion of the region.
