Event narrative

Trained spotters reported 9.0 inches in Massapequa, 11.0 inches at 1 SSW Oceanside, and 10.2 inches at 1 WSW Elmont. Cocorahs reported 11.3 inches at 0.5 SSE Malverne and 10.5 inches at 1 ESE Malverne. The public reported 12.1 inches in North Merrick, and 10.5 inches at 1 NNW Valley Stream. Snowfall amounts across the zone averaged around or just above 10 inches, not including any additional sleet accumulation for the most part. In Massapequa a man died of a heart attack while operating a snow blower.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure system emerged out of the Southern Plains and Texas and rode northeast through the Tennessee Valley and the Appalachians, before emerging just off the New Jersey coast. This produced a heavy snowfall across all of Southeastern New York, with sleet, some of it heavy across a large portion of the region.
