Event narrative

The public reported 11.5 inches at 2 ENE Shinnecock Hills and 11.2 inches at 3 ENE Sag Harbor. The following subsequent snowfall observations were reported; 11.4 inches in 2 E Flanders, 11.0 inches in 1 SSE Hampton Bays, and 8.6 inches in Center Moriches. Average snowfall amounts with sleet included for the zone were estimated to be more than 10 inches but less than 12 inches.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure system emerged out of the Southern Plains and Texas and rode northeast through the Tennessee Valley and the Appalachians, before emerging just off the New Jersey coast. This produced a heavy snowfall across all of Southeastern New York, with sleet, some of it heavy across a large portion of the region.
