An official NWS observation of 10.1 inches was reported at La Guardia airport. The following subsequent snowfall reports are as follows; 11.1 inches in 1 W Whitestone, 10.1 inches in Little Neck 0.3 SE, and 10.1 inches in Astoria. Estimated average snowfall across the zone was around 10 inches.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure system emerged out of the Southern Plains and Texas and rode northeast through the Tennessee Valley and the Appalachians, before emerging just off the New Jersey coast. This produced a heavy snowfall across all of Southeastern New York, with sleet, some of it heavy across a large portion of the region.
