Event narrative

While lower elevations saw moderate snow accumulations of 2 to 7 inches, including 2.3 inches in West Glacier and 7 inches at Marias Pass, the higher terrain received 1 to 2 feet of new snow. The most hazardous travel conditions were experienced at Marias Pass, where southwest winds gusted to 40 mph, creating blowing and drifting snow until temperatures finally rose above freezing by mid-morning December 6.

Wider weather episode

A potent atmospheric river moved into the Northern Rockies between December 4 and 7, delivering significant mountain snowfall. While the event began with heavy snow across the region, a transition to rain and freezing rain occurred in some valleys.
