The wider storm
Cold air in the wake of a winter storm that brought widespread snowfall to central Pennsylvania allowed for many locations to experience a prolonged period of cold weather beginning on January 27th and continuing into January 31, 2026. Cold air in the wake of the winter system allowed for a period of much cooler than average temperatures with gusty winds also allowing for dangerously cold wind chills across western Pennsylvania January 26th and into January 27th. High pressure in the wake of an Arctic Front passage on January 30th allowed for bitterly cold temperatures to continue into January 31st, especially across western Pennsylvania.
