Event narrative

Periodic wind gusts above 60 mph occurred from mid-day on 12/29 through the morning hours of 12/30. The strongest wind gust, 66 mph, was both the strongest and first wind gust over 60 mph during this period.

Wider weather episode

High winds occurred after the passage of a strong cold front as a pressure gradient increased between a departing low pressure system and a building high pressure system. Gusts of roughly 60 to 65 mph were measured by equipment across some of the higher elevations of southwest Virginia between the early afternoon on the 29th through the pre-dawn hours of the 30th. The strongest measured gust, 65 mph, occurred near Rugby in Grayson County during the early afternoon of the 29th.
