Periodic gusts of 58 mph or greater occurred one mile southeast of Check from the evening of the 29th trough the morning of the 30th. The strongest gust of 63 mph occurred at 11:53 PM EST.
Wider weather episode
High winds occurred after the passage of a strong cold front as a pressure gradient increased between a departing low pressure system and a building high pressure system. Gusts of roughly 60 to 65 mph were measured by equipment across some of the higher elevations of southwest Virginia between the early afternoon on the 29th through the pre-dawn hours of the 30th. The strongest measured gust, 65 mph, occurred near Rugby in Grayson County during the early afternoon of the 29th.
