Wind gusts at or above 58 mph occurred around one mile north of Bent Mountain from the early afternoon of the 29th through the late evening. The strongest gust of 63 mph occurred at 10:09 PM EST.

High winds occurred after the passage of a strong cold front as a pressure gradient increased between a departing low pressure system and a building high pressure system. Gusts of roughly 60 to 65 mph were measured by equipment across some of the higher elevations of southwest Virginia between the early afternoon on the 29th through the pre-dawn hours of the 30th. The strongest measured gust, 65 mph, occurred near Rugby in Grayson County during the early afternoon of the 29th.
