The wider storm

Low pressure tracking across Quebec province drew an occluded front across the region through the afternoon and evening of the 19th. A strong southerly low level jet crossed the Gulf of Maine and Downeast coast in advance of the occluded front. Southerly winds were sustained at 20 to 30 knots with gusts of generally 40 to 50 knots...locally up to around 55 knots. Peak gusts of 54 knots were measured at the Eastern Maine Shelf Buoy in the Gulf of Maine and at the town Eastport along the Washington county coast. A 49 knot gust was measured at the Jonesport Buoy. Wind gusts of 55 knots were measured at both the Bar Harbor Airport and the town of Blue Hill on the coast of Hancock county. Wave heights reached 20 to 25 feet on the open waters of the Gulf of Maine. The winds snapped and uprooted numerous trees along the Downeast coastlines of both Hancock and Washington counties. Falling trees brought down many power lines and utility poles leading to extensive power outages in many coastal communities.
