Severe(D2) drought continued over all but the far south where Moderate(D1) drought remained in place throughout the month of January.

Wider weather episode

One category improvements were noted in drought severity in areas that had previously been in Extreme(D3) or even some Severe(D2) drought. By the end of the month, there were no areas in southern New Mexico in Extreme(D3) drought or worse.
