Blizzard — White Mountains and High Terrain South of the Yukon River, Alaska

2025-12-06 · White Mountains and High Terrain South of the Yukon River, Alaska

Event narrative

The Alaska DOT reported consistent wind gusts of 50 mph or higher across Eagle Summit throughout the morning hours of Saturday, December 6th. This resulted in blowing snow and visibilities well below 1/4 mile. As a result the DOT closed the road at Eagle Summit until later in the day when the winds began to subside.

Wider weather episode

A strong low pressure center tracking from Bristol Bay to Prince William Sound pushed a band of moderate snow across interior Alaska. This low coupled with strong high pressure over the Arctic Ocean to produce strong northeast winds in the wake of the snow system that resulted in a considerable amount of blowing snow and occasional blizzard conditions.
