A passing clipper system and shortwave trough, combined with cold temperatures aloft caused a period of lake enhanced and then lake effect snow to develop down wind of both Lake Erie & Ontario. Moderate to heavy snow persisted the longest, into the day on the 16th off of Lake Ontario with a more favorable wind direction and slightly better atmospheric moisture setup. Snowfall amounts off of Lake Ontario ranged from 7 to 8.5 inches for this generally short duration snow event.
