Winter Weather in West Elk and Sawatch Mountains, Colorado

Winter Weather December 5, 2025 – December 6, 2025 · West Elk and Sawatch Mountains, Colorado

What the National Weather Service wrote

Generally 6 to 13 inches of snow fell across the area with 13 inches of snow reported at Crested Butte 6.2 N.

The wider storm

A surge of deeper moisture moved across the area accompanied by a strong low pressure trough and upper level jet. This resulted in moderate snow across the central Colorado mountains and I-70 corridor from south of Glenwood Springs towards Basalt and Carbondale. The heaviest snow occurred across the northwest Colorado mountains where the Elkheads and Park Range Mountains received up to 2 to 3 feet of snow. The strong jet also resulted in some strong wind gusts in the mountains resulting in blowing snow.
