The wider storm

A strong low pressure system over the Mid Mississippi Valley lifted into the Great Lakes on the 20th, driving a warm front north towards New England. By the evening of the 20th an occlusion developed along the front in the vicinity of Chesapeake Bay and secondary low pressure began to deepen. Snow moved into the region and got heavier during the evening and overnight as the secondary low pressure became dominant and moved to a position east of Cape Cod. The upper trough trailing the system prolonged light snowfall into the early morning hours of the 21st before coming to an end. Key message: heavy snow, traffic accidents, dangerous travel.
