Event narrative

Diamond Shoals buoy measured several hours of frequent storm force wind gusts between the evening of January thirty-first and the morning of February first.

Wider weather episode

A low pressure system developed along a baroclinic zone off the coast of Georgia during the overnight hours between Friday January 30th and Saturday January31st. This low then began to rapidly deepen during the evening hours of January 31st while tracking northeastwards along the Carolina Coast making its closest point of approach to the coastal waters near North Carolina during the early morning hours of Sunday February 1st with a minimum pressure around 994 mb before the system departed off to the north and east. With strong high pressure ridging building in from the north and west a tight pressure gradient spread over most of our waters bringing Storm Force wind gusts to much of the coastal and interior waters of eastern North Carolina during the evening of January 31st to the morning of February 1st.
