The wider storm
A low pressure system developed along a baroclinic zone off the coast of Georgia during the overnight hours between Friday January thirtieth and Saturday January thirty-first. This low then began to rapidly deepen during the evening hours of January thirty-first while tracking northeastwards along the Carolina Coast making its closest point of approach to the coastal waters near North Carolina during the early morning hours of Sunday February first with a minimum pressure around 994 mb before the system departed off to the north and east. With strong high pressure ridging building in from the north and west a tight pressure gradient spread over most of our waters bringing Storm Force wind gusts to much of the coastal and interior waters of eastern North Carolina during the evening of January thirty-first to the morning of February first.
Began near Kill Devil Hills (35.9900, -76.1855).
