2026-01-01 to 2026-01-31 · Coahoma, Mississippi
Event narrative
Abnormally Dry and D1 Moderate Drought conditions worsened to D1 and D2 Severe Drought conditions, respectively by the end of the month. The Drought Monitor first revealed D2 conditions in southern portions of the county on January 13 and persisting for the rest of the month.
Wider weather episode
January featured multiple precipitation events, including rainfall and a significant winter storm (snow/ice) late in the month, which affected much of the Mid-South. These events contributed to short-term surface moisture gains. Despite these events, precipitation was not sufficient or consistent enough to fully eliminate long-term deficits, especially in areas that experienced prolonged dryness during fall 2025.
