Event narrative

Between a half inch to one and a half inches of snow and sleet fell, along with a quarter inch of ice near the town of Oxford.

Wider weather episode

A powerful winter storm developed on 24 January and did not fully let up until early on 26 January. After a strong Arctic cold front arrived the prior day, an area of low pressure tracked across the southeastern United States, bringing a plume of moisture into the Carolinas. A wintry mix of freezing rain, sleet, and snow developed, with the greatest snow and sleet accumulations over the Piedmont and the highest ice accumulations over the Sandhills and Coastal Plain of central North Carolina.
