Winter Storm — Cherokee, South Carolina

2026-01-25 · Cherokee, South Carolina

Wider weather episode

Precipitation associated with an intensifying low pressure system over the Deep South developed along and near the I-85 corridor in the South Carolina around midnight early on the 25th. The precipitation began as mostly sleet, which continued through the early morning hours before mixing with, and eventually changing to freezing rain later in the morning. The precipitation finally tapered off during the early evening. Total sleet accumulations of 1 to 2 inches occurred, with around 0.25 inch of ice accreting on top of the sleet. This made for very hazardous driving conditions. Due to unusually cold weather following the event, several days of refreezing resulted in travel difficulties continuing during the overnight and morning hours.
