Winter Storm — York, South Carolina

2026-01-25 · York, South Carolina

Wider weather episode

Precipitation associated with an intensifying low pressure system over the Deep South developed across the eastern South Carolina Piedmont during the early morning of the 25th. The precipitation began as mostly sleet before mixing with, and eventually changing to freezing rain later in the morning. The precipitation finally tapered off during the evening. Total sleet accumulations of around an inch occurred, with 0.10 to 0.25 inch of ice accreting on top of the sleet. This made for very hazardous driving conditions. Due to unusually cold weather following the event, a couple of days of refreezing resulted in travel difficulties continuing during the overnight and morning hours.
