Event narrative

Sleet and snow totals generally between 0.4 and 5.8 inches were reported around Collin County, as well as about 0.05 inches of freezing rain. The highest sleet total was reported in Melissa by a member of the public, with freezing rain reported near Plano and New Hope. Unfortunately 2 female teenagers died in a sledding accident in Frisco. Across the DFW Metroplex, one children's hospital reported 52 sledding related injuries.

Wider weather episode

The only winter weather event of the season occurred January 23-25. A mix of sleet and snow fell across the region, but sleet was the predominant precipitation type. The highest sleet and snow totals were north of Interstate 20, and the highest freezing rain totals were in our far eastern counties. In addition to the wintry precipitation, bitterly cold air accompanied the system meeting Extreme Cold Warning criteria through the 27th. Unfortunately 8 deaths were reported with this event.
