Event narrative
Snow squall.
Wider weather episode
During the morning of January 11th, a trough over the region helped to initiate a lake effect snow band that briefly develop northeast of Lake Erie. As the troughs axis crossed the Western New York area it pushed the lake effect snow band due east across much of the area south of Lake Ontario. The combination of the lake effect snow band and the increased forcing from the trough axis caused periods of snow squall conditions across portions of Western New York, most notably in the Rochester Metro area and near Wellsville.
