High Wind in Central Gunnison and Uncompahgre River Basin, Colorado
High Wind February 18, 2026 · Central Gunnison and Uncompahgre River Basin, Colorado
What the National Weather Service wrote
The peak, and only, gust to be recorded during this event in this zone was 58 mph at KMTJ ASOS at Montrose Regional Airport in Montrose, CO. The gust occurred at 10:11 AM MST. No other gusts above 45 mph were recorded on this day, though that does not discount that gusts to this level or above occurred, as there are only so many sensors in the zone. No reports of injuries, damages, or fatalities associated with this high wind event were received.
The wider storm
Winds on the 18th were generally weaker than the winds that had occurred with cold-frontal passage the day before. However, a strong northwesterly jet remained aloft, and daytime mixing allowed for stronger, post-frontal winds to gust across the region. Particularly, northwest to southeast oriented valleys, and areas around the Four Corners, are favored under this type of post-frontal regime.
