Drought in Quitman, Mississippi
Drought February 1, 2026 – February 28, 2026 · Quitman, Mississippi
What the National Weather Service wrote
Severe Drought (D2) conditions persisted in southern portions of the county through the month.
The wider storm
Much of the region was classified in Extreme (D3) to Severe (D2) drought. While the southern tier of north Mississippi received more rainfall than the north (4'6 inches in some spots), it wasn't enough to overcome long-term deficits. By the end of February, the drought began to manifest as a serious fire hazard. The wildland fire outlook for March was upgraded to 'Above Normal' for North Mississippi. In a few northern counties, the combination of dormant winter vegetation and low humidity prompted early discussions of burn restrictions. Livestock producers in this area also reported that pastures were providing little to no feed, necessitating supplemental hay.
