The wider storm

A strong cold front began tracking east from lee of the Appalachians to the Triad region of North Carolina during the late morning and afternoon hours of Monday March Sixteenth. Out ahead of this front, a prefrontal trough developed across the Coastal Plain. With ample moisture, instability, as well as low level and deep layer wind shear noted across North Carolina, scattered shower and thunderstorm activity developed along and out ahead of the prefrontal trough. Given the favorable conditions a few of the thunderstorms became strong in nature producing a mix of waterspouts and strong wind gusts across the Pamlico, Croatan, Roanoke, and Albemarle sounds and coastal waters north of Ocracoke Inlet.

Began near Plymouth (36.0793, -76.3925).
