What the National Weather Service wrote
The CoCoRaHS station MI-HG-24 Hancock reported 8.8 inches of snow at 9 AM on the 18th, with similar reports around the county. Freezing rain was estimated to have occurred in the west half of the county. Significant drifting of snow made roads almost impassable according to the City of Houghton and a large plow truck was totaled when it ran off the road. Key impacts: school closures, municipality closures, hazardous travel.
The wider storm
A deep occluded low approaching the UP from the west on the 18th brought a warm front just south of the UP and eventually the occluded front moved over the UP as the low weakened by the 19th. This brought a mess of heavy wet snow and freezing rain as well as high winds. Impacts included a majority of school districts closed, municipal facilities closed, power outages, and near-impassible roads.
