The wider storm

An intense low-pressure system tracking through the northern Great Lakes brought damaging winds of 50 to 71 mph to much of southeast Michigan. The strongest gusts were concentrated along and south of the M-59 corridor, where numerous trees and power lines were downed across the Detroit Metro area. Both Detroit City Airport and Ann Arbor Airport recorded peak gusts of 71 mph during the height of the storm. The most intense winds occurred in the afternoon following the passage of a strong cold front, leaving around 200,000 DTE Energy customers without power at the peak of the event. Tragically, the storm claimed the life of a Huntington Woods public works employee, who was struck by a falling tree limb while working to clear a roadway during the evening hours.
