High Wind in Hockley, Texas
High Wind April 26, 2026 · Hockley, Texas
The wider storm
On the afternoon of the 26th, a strong upper level trough moved across the Rockies inducing cyclogenesis in the lee of the Rockies. This allowed a strong surface pressure gradient to form across West Texas and generated strong winds. Several Texas Tech University West Texas mesonet sites briefly measured severe wind gusts. It is suspected that the abnormally high wind gust at Muleshoe was due to a dust devil.
