The wider storm

A quasi-stationary front drifted into northern Virginia, supported aloft by a weak upper level trough, provided instability for a few severe thunderstorms to develop. Lapse rates of around 6-7 degrees C/km and CAPE values between 1000-2000 J/kg were observed, in addition to afternoon surface temperatures in the 80s, triggered thunderstorms that produced large hail along the Blue Ridge into the Piedmont.
