The wider storm

A strong low pressure system pressing through the Great Lakes region on March 13th resulted in a windy day across northeast Kentucky. This was due to the combination of a tightened pressure gradient and strengthening low level jet aloft. Daytime heating helped to create turbulent mixing of these stronger winds down to the surface, especially during the afternoon and early evening hours. Wind gusts in excess of 40 to 50 miles per hour noted in northeast Kentucky resulted in downed trees and power lines across the area. The wind gradually declined after sunset that evening as the pressure gradient eased its hold over the area.
