The wider storm

A strong low pressure system brought a period of strong winds, along with rain, to eastern New York on March 16-17, 2026. Winds started in the southerly direction before switching to the west behind the cold front. Widespread wind gusts of 40 to 50 mph were observed with some localized gusts approaching 60 mph. These winds along with the softer ground due to rain led to numerous reports of downed trees and wires. Approximately 48,000 customers lost power across eastern New York.
