Rip Current March 9, 2026 · Northeast, Puerto Rico
What the National Weather Service wrote
Three people were swept away by rip currents along the coast of Luquillo, just behind the La Parrilla establishment. All three individuals were rescued from the water. Two survived the incident, while one person was transported to a hospital in Fajardo, where the individual was later pronounced dead due to drowning.
The wider storm
A broad surface high pressure over the Central Atlantic, extending into the Caribbean, promoted strong winds across the region. As a result, wind-driven seas between 5 and 7 feet were observed across the Atlantic nearshore waters of the islands. This caused life-threatening rip currents along the northern beaches of Puerto Rico during the week of March 9.
