The wider storm
The synoptic setup was similar to May 14th, with a nearby shortwave interacting with elevated moisture to produce a few high-based thunderstorms (mainly over southeast New Mexico and the Permian Basin). A couple of thunderstorms managed to produce damaging downburst winds, including an 84 mph gust in northern Gaines County. Convection largely diminished after dark.
