Heavy Snow in Gilmer, West Virginia

Heavy Snow March 16, 2026 – March 17, 2026 · Gilmer, West Virginia

The wider storm

A strong low pressure system that promoted strong to severe thunderstorms across West Virginia early in the day on March 16th quickly shifted gears into winter weather as a surge colder temperatures filtered into the region. Rain showers transitioned over to snow in the afternoon and evening and prevailed into the morning of March 17th. During that time, the bulk of the state received 2 to 4 inches of snow, while a narrow band of heavier snow transpired across north-central West Virginia. By the morning of the 17th, local CoCoRaHS and cooperative observers measured 5 to 8 inches of snow from Mason County and eastward over to Lewis County as a resulted of this heavy snow band. After a messy weather pattern from March 15th to the 17th, quieter conditions settled in under the guise of high pressure.
