The wider storm

On Tuesday, April 14th, a southwest flow pattern transported a warm, humid air mass into central New York, creating a favorable environment for severe thunderstorms during the afternoon and evening. The combination of sufficient instability, strong wind shear, and an approaching shortwave disturbance provided the necessary ingredients for thunderstorm development. The strongest storms produced estimated damaging wind gusts of 50 knots knocking down trees and wires.

Began near Sanford (42.0998, -75.4335).
