The wider storm
During the late afternoon and evening hours of April 9th, 2026, a surface boundary draped over northeast Kansas into north-central Missouri retreated northward. As the boundary moved north, moisture pooled across the far southern portions of the area, pushing dew points into the low 50s. A shortwave moved over the southern half of the region, and combined with continued low-level warm advection, triggered an area of thunderstorms along the boundary through the late afternoon and evening.
Deep-layer wind shear (0-6 km bulk shear) of 40 to 50 knots combined with most unstable CAPE (MUCAPE) of 500 to 1,000 J/kg fostered an environment capable of supporting severe convection. As these severe storms tracked eastward into southwest Iowa, they produced damaging wind gusts. A 59 mph wind gust was measured in Mills County, followed by a 58 mph wind gust in Page County between 6 and 7 PM CST.
Began near Bethesda (40.8900, -95.0700).
