What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A few minutes after the tornado near Dale dissipated, a separate circulation was noted on radar, which tightened and moved to the south and southeast. This tornado likely began northwest of the Leo Avenue and Wolverine Road intersection. While moving to the southeast, sporadic EF0 damage to trees was noted on Leo Avenue, north of Garretts Lake Road. EF1 damage was assessed to a gas station awning along Oklahoma State Highway 18 and Westech Road.

The wider storm

A high-amplitude (closed) upper storm system moved eastward across the Rockies on the 3rd and fostered a severe convective episode across portions of Oklahoma and western-north Texas. Initial thunderstorm development during the afternoon focused along a cold front from southwest into north-central Oklahoma, with a mix of multicell and supercell storm modes producing hail. Later in the evening, an intense complex of thunderstorms moved from west-central into east-central Oklahoma, including across the Oklahoma City Metropolitan area. This cluster produced swaths of damaging winds and several tornadoes. By the late evening, increasing frontal thunderstorms moved towards the Red River, producing intermittent wind gusts/damage and flooding.

Began near Aydelotte (35.4230, -96.9530).
