The Trigg Wildfire was discovered during the evening of May 21st in far eastern San Miguel County with an unknown cause. The fire burned an estimated 2,000 acres northwest of Conchas Lake with no reported damages through May 25th.
The wider storm
An upper level disturbance moving across the central Rockies combined with higher moisture across the southeast plains of NM resulted in the development of multiple severe thunderstorms across southern Roosevelt County during the mid afternoon to mid evening hours. These thunderstorms resulted in three rounds of hail up to ping pong diameter between Pep and the Roosevelt and Lea County border. Back building of severe thunderstorms across this area resulted in some minor flooding in culverts and low lying areas. Thunderstorms tapered off just before sunset on May 21st due to the loss of daytime heating. Two more rounds of thunderstorms developed across the northeast and east central plains of NM during the afternoon on May 22nd and 23rd. These storms resulted in a severe wind gust at a public weather station near Melrose on May 22nd and at Tucumcari Municipal Airport on May 23rd. Storms exited into west Texas during the evening hours. The Trigg wildfire was also discovered in far eastern San Miguel County, burning through May 25th before coming under control.
