What the National Weather Service wrote

Two rescue divers were injured at La Poza de las Mujeres after being struck by a large wave, thrown against rocks, and swept away by strong rip currents during a recovery operation. The divers suffered various fractures and trauma. The injured divers were rescued from the water by a police helicopter (FURA) and transported to a medical center in stable condition.

The wider storm

High surf conditions led to an incident on April 2, 2026, at Poza Las Mujeres Beach in Manati, Puerto Rico. Two individuals from Bayamon, PR, a 23-year-old woman and a 24-year-old man, were walking along a rock formation near the natural pools when a wave swept the man into the ocean. While Emergency Management personnel successfully rescued the woman, the search for her companion continued for two days. Authorities recovered the man's body in a nearby area two days after the incident. However, two rescue divers were injured attempting to retrieve the body after being struck by a large wave, thrown against rocks, and swept away by strong rip currents. The divers suffered various fractures and trauma and had to be rescued by helicopter.
