What EF1 means. On the Enhanced Fujita scale, EF1 is moderate damage: roofs badly stripped, mobile homes pushed off foundations or overturned, windows broken, consistent with estimated gusts of 86–110 mph. The rating comes from a survey of the worst damage after the storm, not from a wind measurement, so it says as much about what the tornado hit as about how strong it was.

What the National Weather Service wrote

A tornado embedded within a line of severe thunderstorms

developed Thursday night in extreme southeast LaGrange County.

Around Taylor Lake and Lake of the Woods, damage to electrical

poles, along with impressive tree damage in spots, was determined

to be consistent with an EF-1 rating, with maximum winds

estimated at 90 mph. The tornado then raced northeastward into

Steuben County. As the parent cell merged with another portion of

the line, the tornado took a more easterly turn, impacting

portions of western and northern Angola. Much of the damage along

the path was inflicted on trees, suggesting the tornado may have

occasionally lifted off the surface.

The wider storm

A squall line raced through northern Indiana and spawned numerous tornadoes. Most tornadoes were narrow and lasted less then 10 minutes. Additional areas of straight line wind damage were noted as well.

Began near Helmer (41.5540, -85.1940).
