High Wind May 13, 2026 · Gray, Texas

60 mph
Measured gust (52 kt)

What the National Weather Service wrote

A couple of gusts to 59 and 60 mph occurred between 2111CDT and 2130CDT at the mesonet location one mile to the east northeast of Mclean, likely from a heat burst behind dissipating thunderstorms.

The wider storm

A few short lived thunderstorms formed in the eastern Texas Panhandle on the evening of May 13th. One of these storms was exiting Gray County as it was dissipating and the environment left behind helped cause a heat burst in Gray County, which led to gusts around 60 mph. The next day, May 14th, scattered thunderstorms moved across the combined Oklahoma and Texas Panhandles. These storms lacked the instability and shear to produce large hail, but the nature of a dry surface layer allowed for storms to produce severe winds in excess of 60 mph across the region. In addition, these storms produced very little rainfall and lightning induced numerous fires across the region. Finally, on the evening of the 15th, showers and thunderstorms developed over the northwest combined Panhandles. These storms also produced severe wind gusts across portions of the area.
