What the National Weather Service wrote
Mesonet station GW0718 Joplin 25nnw measured a 63 mph wind gust. Numerous mesonet stations also measured high wind gusts in the zone, and a few measured high sustained winds over the span of 4 to 6 hours.
The wider storm
A trough brought an increase in southerly winds aloft on the 13th. This combined with a strongly unstable atmosphere brought severe thunderstorms producing scattered severe wind gusts across the region. High synoptic wind gusts also accompanied thunderstorms on the 13th and 14th.
