The wider storm
A grazing shortwave trough north of Utah sent a cold front into the region. Ahead of and along this boundary there was enough moisture to result in isolated to scattered convective development, with much of this activity higher based in nature. As a result, numerous strong to severe wind gusts were recorded or reported. Additionally, a period of strong winds downsloping off of terrain was noted in portions of northwest Utah following the passage of the frontal boundary.
