The wider storm

During the afternoon of the 4th, an upper-level trough was moving in from the west. Synoptic lift ahead of this feature, coupled with upslope flow and some lift from decaying outflow, allowed showers and thunderstorms to develop in/around the higher terrain and in western portions of the Permian Basin. Convection tended to move slowly and produce heavy rainfall during the evening and into the early morning hours of the 5th. As a result, flash flooding was reported in Gaines and Pecos Counties.

Began near Ft Stockton (30.9099, -102.8763).
