Flood in Fortymile Country, Alaska
Flood May 5, 2026 – May 6, 2026 · Fortymile Country, Alaska
Where the report was made, with tornadoes recorded within 15 miles over the years.
What the National Weather Service wrote
Yukon river ice stopped moving and jammed near Eagle, forcing water levels to rise rapidly upstream. Water approached road levels between the town and the village, and large blocks of river ice were pushed onshore. Local residents and official NWS River Watch flights confirmed that water was affecting road access into Eagle Village.
The wider storm
The 2026 spring breakup along the Yukon River was highly dynamic, defined by a combination of thermal ice decay and severe mechanical ice jams. Because of an exceptionally cold winter and a cool spring, the river ice was thicker than normal and had not deteriorated significantly before the main breakup front arrived. Early-season flooding was driven by localized snowmelt and ice jams on independent river systems and upper sections of the Yukon River.
Began near Eagle (64.7483, -141.0504).
