Flood May 6, 2026 – May 10, 2026 · Yukon Flats, Alaska
Where the report was made, with tornadoes recorded within 15 miles over the years.
What the National Weather Service wrote
A 10-mile-long ice jam formed several river bends below Chalkyitsik on the Draanjik River. It completely blocked the channel, pushing large chunks of ice onshore and causing river levels in the community to rise slowly but continuously for several days. Public and emergency mangers reported flooding in Chalkyiksik, with low-lying and poor drainage areas experiencing most of the flooding. By Saturday May 9th, the ice jam had broken up downriver and conditions had improved.
The wider storm
The 2026 spring breakup along the Yukon River was highly dynamic, defined by a combination of thermal ice decay and severe mechanical ice jams. Because of an exceptionally cold winter and a cool spring, the river ice was thicker than normal and had not deteriorated significantly before the main breakup front arrived. Early-season flooding was driven by localized snowmelt and ice jams on independent river systems and upper sections of the Yukon River.
Began near Chalkyitsik (66.6717, -143.7949).
