What the National Weather Service wrote

NWS personnel involved with ongoing River Watch flights reported that a combination of snowmelt and upstream ice jam releases resulted in high water volumes moving down the Yukon river caused water levels to rise steadily over several days near Grayling, eventually inundating low-lying roads and a few outbuildings or minor structures.

The wider storm

As the third week of May 2026 unfolded, the dynamic breakup front stalled repeatedly along the Lower Yukon, creating a cascading sequence of severe jams and flooding. This period involved massive downstream surges as well as backwater effects in tributaries like the Andreafsky and Chuilnuk.

Began near Grayling (62.8518, -160.2357).
