What the National Weather Service wrote

The NWS River Watch team observed a 30-mile thick run of bank to bank ice pushing towards the coast that caused Kwiguk Pass to jam up heavily at it's mouth, backing floodwaters directly into the village of Emmonak. The river stage surged to 9.7 feet (approaching the historic 11.5-foot record), leaving all roads to the local airport entirely impassable by vehicles. The Emmonak High School had to be opened as an emergency shelter for displaced residents.

The wider storm

The dynamic breakup front finally arrived at the lower reaches of the Yukon River across the Yukon Delta by late May 2026. This resulted in severe, cascading flood impacts for multiple communities as the high water made it's way to the mouth of the Yukon River, inundating the coastal delta.

Began near Emmonak (62.7900, -164.5524).
