The wider storm

An unusually strong low pressure system swung through southern Virginia, dragging a cold front across Eastern North Carolina and offshore by the evening hours. Ahead of it, bands of thunderstorms formed in the afternoon due to unstable conditions and wind shear in place. Scattered severe wind gusts embedded in some of the storms impacted portions of the Albemarle and Pamlico Sound as well as the coastal waters north of Oregon Inlet.
